What is a high-intent conversation lead?

A high-intent conversation lead is a recent public discussion where the author has a problem your product can solve and is showing evidence that they may act—such as requesting recommendations, evaluating alternatives, or describing an urgent workaround. A topic match alone is not enough.

The short version

A useful lead needs three things at the same time: a problem you can genuinely solve, evidence that the person is considering action, and a context where a helpful reply is appropriate. If one is missing, the post may still be useful research—but it should not enter the sales queue.

Four different outcomes—not one lead bucket

Public conversations are valuable in different ways. Separating them before outreach prevents a broad topic match from becoming an unwanted sales message.

ClassificationWhat it meansWhat to do
High-intent leadThe author has a relevant problem and is actively looking for a solution, recommendation, or alternative.Review the context and reply if you can give a useful, specific answer.
ResearchThe discussion reveals customer language or pain, but the author is not currently seeking the kind of solution you provide.Learn from it. Do not force a product pitch.
EngagementThe conversation is relevant to your expertise and may support a genuine relationship, but it is not a sales opportunity.Contribute only when the reply is valuable without mentioning your product.
NoiseA keyword matched, but the author, problem, context, or timing does not fit.Skip it and use the mismatch to improve future filtering.

The signals that make intent actionable

No single phrase proves buying intent. Look for several signals that reinforce one another:

  • Solution-seeking: the author asks for a tool, workflow, recommendation, or alternative.
  • Specific pain: the problem, failed approach, constraint, or desired outcome is concrete.
  • Product fit: your product can address the stated situation without changing the subject.
  • Action evidence: the author is comparing options, replacing a workaround, or trying to solve the problem now.
  • Freshness: the discussion is active enough for another answer to be useful.
  • Reply safety: the community rules and conversation make a transparent, useful response appropriate.

Strong intent cannot rescue weak fit. Someone actively looking for an advertising agency is not a ZeroToUser lead merely because they also mention difficulty finding customers.

Examples: lead, research, or noise?

“I launched my B2B SaaS and want to find people already asking for this solution on Reddit. Is there a tool for that?”

High-intent lead: the author names the problem, desired workflow, channel, and solution category. A transparent product mention could directly answer the question.

“What marketing channels worked best for your marketplace?”

Research: this may reveal acquisition concerns, but the author is asking for broad strategy—not a way to find high-intent conversations. Learn from the answers; do not treat the thread as a direct product opportunity.

“Social listening is changing how large consumer brands measure sentiment.”

Engagement or noise: the topic is adjacent, but there is no stated SaaS founder problem or evidence that the author is looking for a solution.

A repeatable qualification test

Before moving a public conversation into a sales queue, answer these questions:

  1. What exact problem is the author trying to solve?
  2. What in the post shows they may act rather than simply discuss the topic?
  3. Which product capability directly fits that problem?
  4. Why is this conversation worth joining now?
  5. Can we write a useful reply that works even if the product name is removed?

If the first three answers are vague, classify the conversation as research or noise. If the last answer is no, skip the reply even when the fit is strong.

How ZeroToUser uses this framework

ZeroToUser collects public Reddit and X conversations related to a founder's product profile, then evaluates more than the matching keyword. It looks for evidence around intent, problem fit, freshness, and reply risk before deciding whether a conversation deserves attention.

Qualified opportunities include an explanation of why they matched and a suggested reply angle. The founder still reviews the original context, decides whether to engage, edits any draft, and sends the response manually. ZeroToUser does not automatically post replies.

What this classification does not promise

Relevance is not the same as conversion. A well-qualified conversation can still produce no response, trial, or sale. Public text may be incomplete, sarcastic, outdated, or missing business context, and automated classification can be wrong.

Treat the score and explanation as decision support, not proof of purchase intent. Human review, respectful participation, and outcome tracking remain necessary. Over time, false positives and skipped opportunities should be used to refine the product profile and qualification rules.

Turn the method into a daily workflow

ZeroToUser ranks relevant Reddit and X conversations, explains the match, and helps you draft a reply that you review and send yourself.
